Condensation surveys in Northern Ireland

Condensation surveys across Northern Ireland.

What condensation surveys involves

Condensation forms when warm, moist air inside the home meets a cold surface. Cooking, showers, drying washing and simply breathing all add moisture, and in a well-sealed house with little airflow it can settle on windows and walls and feed mould.

A condensation survey looks at how much moisture the home is producing, where the cold surfaces are and how well air is moving through. It suits families with streaming windows every winter morning, landlords facing mould complaints and anyone who suspects damp but finds no obvious leak.

How much moisture

The specialist asks about cooking, bathing, drying clothes and heating, because the household routine is often the biggest factor.

Where it settles

Surface temperature readings find the cold spots, such as outside corners, window reveals and lintels, where moisture condenses first.

How can I tell condensation from damp coming through the wall?

Condensation tends to appear on cold surfaces in winter and is worst in rooms with steam or many occupants. Penetrating or rising damp follows the structure and weather. The specialist's readings tell the two apart.

Will a dehumidifier solve condensation?

It can help, but it treats the symptom. The survey looks at why moisture is building up so that ventilation, heating or insulation changes can deal with the cause.

Can new windows make condensation worse?

They can. Modern windows seal out draughts that used to carry moist air away, so a home may need extra ventilation once older frames are replaced.
